Matanzas is the second modern city in America due to the criteria used in its foundation. It was thought, drawn, raised on the ground and brought its first inhabitants from the Canary Islands. In this sense it is a city made in reverse, with elements of modern urban layout. The Spaniards arrived in a damaged boat. When the Indians carried them to shore, they were suddenly thrown into the water, drowning most of them. The survivors were hanged on a kapok tree. Three years later, in November 1513, another group of Spaniards arrived and learned of the killing of their companions by the mouth of two surviving and captive women. They started calling the place “Bahía de la Matanza”
